FORGOT YOUR DETAILS?

Capoeira is actually quite diverse in its teaching with each group has its own lineage and their own distinct style. I would hazard a guess though, that the first lesson in nearly every one of the groups will involve learning how to ‘Ginga’.

Ginga

The Ginga is the fundamental movement of Capoeira and means to swing or sway.

It is a side to side movement designed to keep the Capoerista in constant motion and enables them to dodge incoming attacks, trick their opponents and increase the momentum of their own attacks.

Things you need to remember:

1) Ginga must be lower, legs are in lunge like position
2) Arms need to be looser and more expressive
3) Ginga must always pass through Cadeira (trans. chair – similar to horse stance - squads)
4) The inside arm needs to protect the head, while the outside arm needs to be ‘active’ and be ready to or for an attack.
